While the whole nation is getting marvelled at the enlisting of Harappan cities and The Ramappa Temple into UNESCO WHS, the archaeologists in India made a fascinating discovery; though it seems small but makes a large impact on Indian history. This discovery bears the unique symbols of ancient alchemy, the sun and the moon. This discovery was made at Keeladi of Tamil Nadu. The archaeologists unearthed an ancient punched silver coin!
It has been unearthed at the Keeladi archaeological site, which is located on the banks of the Vaigai River. The coin has the insignias of the sun, the moon, a bull, and a dog on its obverse, and a half circle along with a sign resembling a Tamil letter on its other side. This made the archaeologists baffle as the significance of this coin takes the glory of this land much farther.
Thangam Thennarasu, minister for industries, Tamil development, and archaeology, said that the coin may have been used in trade with communities in northern India before the rise of the Mauryan Empire, around 321 B.C. However, this itself says that the coin is much more ancient than it has been thought of. It might also belong to the Sangam period where Siddhars like Bhoganathar roamed across the subcontinent!
